I like kooky stories and kooky characters. I like being able to read a book that just takes me away to a place even less sane than my own life. This is one of those stories. The main character, Gladie (short for Gladys), does not keep a job longer than a couple of weeks but finds herself going to work for her grandmother who happens to be a matchmaker. Grandmother Zelda does not leave her home but has the gift of sight when it comes to love and is trying to pass the business on to her only grandchild. Gladie is pretty sure that she does not and will not ever have the sight. In the meantime a murder occurs just across the street and Gladie gets pulled into the search for the killer.
The book is written with a matchmaking tip from grandmother at the beginning of each chapter which is very enjoyable. The chapters are then filled with Gladie coming to terms with matchmaking and solving the murder mystery. Sure, it is hokey, melodramatic and whimsical but hey, who doesn’t need a break every once in a while for a little fun!?
