Ds Wendy Knight has a very promising career that she has nurtured to the point of having almost nothing else in her life other than her drug-addicted brother, Michael, that she has pretty much given up on. She works closely with her boss DCI Culverhouse and the two pair up when 4 women are found to have been killed in the same way within a few days. In the middle of the investigation, Wendy receives a call that Michael is in the hospital having overdosed on heroin. Wendy rushes to see him and ends up taking Michael home to her apartment to recover and their relationship begins to reconnect as he sobers up.
In the meantime, the investigation continues and the fear of more bodies turning up puts the pressure on the two detectives. Wendy also begins dating a guy and actually falling for him. She feels like her life is taking a turn for the best with her career successes, Michael turning his life around and the new boyfriend, until she begins to get suspicious that maybe the new boyfriend has something to do with the murders.
If you read my blog with any regularity you know that I am not a fan of spoiling the book and I am not going to start now, but let me say I was surprised. Croft does a good job of keeping the reader in suspense while having the story flow smoothly. This is a terrific beach/poolside read!
Oops! “sobbers”? Sobers. Huh?
