THE UVALDE RAIDER
A Templar Family Novel
BY BEN H. ENGLISH
The time is the eve of the First Gulf War. The place an abandoned World War II emergency landing strip for heavy bombers, nestled amid the near countless miles upon miles of wide openness in West Texas.
Here a climactic battle will be fought, while the rest of the world focuses on what would become known as Operation Desert Storm.
But in some ways, the stakes here are even higher as men from other places and past conflicts gamble all that they are, and all they ever were, to prevent a catastrophic terrorist attack unthinkable before on an American city.
One group seeks wholesale slaughter, the murder of helpless civilians on a massive scale. The other strives to stop this evil in any way possible, and by whatever means necessary.
The key to either side’s success or failure?
One old Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, an enduring symbol from another war and ensuing catastrophe of a different era. This relic of a not so distant past is named ‘The Uvalde Raider,’ and this is its story…
Review
The Uvalde Raider takes place in the open spaces of West Texas where a Texas Highway Patrolman, his decorated WWII Uncle, and his Uncle’s best friend, a German decorated WWII war hero meet up to take some photos and share stories. The two older war heroes flying their historic refurbished planes onto a leftover WWII landing strip. The US is preparing to take military action against Iraq in what will become known as the First Gulf War. Unbeknownst to these three men planning a joyful reunion, they are about to be confronted with evil in their own backyard.
English has written a book filled with history, suspense, and raw with emotion. I had a hard time putting the book down. Switching back and forth between the current events that the three men are dealing with and the back story of the two men that fought against each other but came to be best friends, the book brings together a deep understanding of the minds of these men and how they will deal with the battle they now face.
Mark Twain is often quoted as saying “Write what you know” for good reason. When an author brings their own experiences to the writing the reader finds a more authentic story. It is very obvious that English served in the military and uses his own experiences to expose the mind of a trained Marine when faced with a life or death situation. Pick a good seat for reading this one as you will be there until the end of the story. A 4 star read!
