Review
Daily has written a captivating novel that explores the idea of living in two different time periods during one lifetime. Emma has just finished college at the top of her class and returned home to her destiny. Emma is the only daughter of a line of only daughters who have managed the largest ranch in Texas for generations, the Thorn Ranch. Emma has known her entire life that this is what she was born for, was raised for, and that this is the expectation of her family. She is prepared, well-trained, skilled, and educated but does she want it?
Set in the current time period, Daily has written a fascinating book in which the female protagonist is wrestling with her future when she discovers a hidden village on her ranch that has been a secret for generations. The People, as they call themselves, are very primitive, with their own religion, culture, rules of governing, etc. When Emma enters this secret world they refuse to let her go.
Daily alternates chapters between current Emma and tribal Emma weaving a tale that puts the reader in the story watching every move Emma makes and wondering how this incredible discovery will play out not only in terms of Emma’s life but in how it will affect the future of the Thorn Ranch. Daily uses great imagination and description in setting up the secret ancient village. It becomes so believable that the reader cannot help but be drawn into the reality of Emma’s situation of not being able to get home while at the same time becoming a part of the secret. This is a real page-turner!
